Diving in Cape Town

Diving in Cape Town is simply spectacular. We have the most amazingly beautiful and diverse reefs and awesome wrecks. Where else could you dive with whales, dolphins, sharks, seals, over 100 species of nudibranch, vividly coloured corals, sea fans, sponges, kelp forests… You name it – we’ve got it. Don’t believe me? Have a look at this slide show of our favourite Cape Town underwater photos and decide for yourself.

Contributing photographers, in no particular order, are:

Olivia Anderson, Arne Gething, Jean Tresfon, Georgina Jones, Geoff Spiby, Andrew Taylor, Guido Zsilavecz, Mark Walters, Thomas Peschak, Charles Maxwell, Ken Strickland, Grant whitford, Wilhelm van Zyl and Adriaan Johnson

We do however have 2 big problems with diving in Cape Town:

Firstly, the water is COLD. It can be as bone chilling as 8°C! That’s why we highly recommend drysuits and decent thermal protection to enable you to really appreciate what Cape Town diving has to offer. We do have some divers that somehow survive in wetsuits but with drysuits becoming more affordable and comfortable, their numbers are dwindling. If you would like to join the drysuit revolution but are unsure about the best way to do it, contact us.

Secondly, we don’t call this the CAPE OF STORMS for nothing! Dive conditions and underwater visibility vary wildly. It could be zero viz with massive surge and blowing a gale one day, and 30m viz, still and pond-flat the next day. So how do we deal with this problem? Easy, we only dive on that next day. This is why Cape Town diving is really suited to local divers with flexible schedules – You need to choose your diving days carefully. There are some local dive operators that take tourists and locals diving in horrendous conditions because that is the only time they can dive. We won’t do that – It leaves a bad impression on visitors and is just not enjoyable or safe.
