In December 2010 we fitted a Lowrance Structure Scan sonar (hull mounted) to Ruby Runner. It enables us to undertake high resolution seabed visualisation surveys to locate and precisely position just about anything underwater. Its main purpose will be to find new wrecks to dive but it can also be used to locate lost ship’s anchors and conduct large-scale surveys in depths from 5m to 50m. Here are 2 images observed in Table Bay; The first is of a ships anchor and chain at 22m and the second is of the wreck of the Highfields (1902) as she lies upside-down near the harbour entrance channel at 24m. The exact corrected co-ordinates of anything displayed and digitally recorded can be obtained simply by moving a cursor over the object and clicking enter – It’s that easy!
